Novokuznetsk Central City Library named in honor of Gogol
A New Life, a New Success Story

Neliya Reznik from Novokuznetsk, a former Russian teacher, was downsized as soon as she hit retirement age. After taking free ICT training in the Digital Literacy Center of N.V. Gogol central library, she not only acquired basic computer skills for her personal benefit, but also, despite her age, managed to land a com-puter-related job in the library.

Neliya Reznik wrote a short essay about this new page of her life:
“First there was God, and there was the Word… The immense power of the Word has always been known to people, but in this age of computers it has become truly enormous. The power is enhanced by the com-puter network that girdles the entire world. And to remain integrated in this new world, one needs to have new Knowledge, the knowledge of His Majesty the Computer!”

“Along with a few other people who, like me, have lived a long life yet remained proactive, in 2010 I com-pleted a Digital Literacy course at N.V. Gogol central library in Novokuznetsk. I loved the whole thing – learning about computers, studying together with my peers, and working with a competent, patient and friendly trainer.”
“After completing the course, I immediately felt practical changes in my life. My knowledge and experience, taking a new form, took on a contemporary edge and shone with new relevance. The landmark of our time, the computer with its various applications – things like Windows 7, MS Paint, etc. – became a part of my life, making it fuller and more complete. The computer gave me a chance to proudly say “Yes, I can!” even in this new and advanced time. Now I can talk to my friends from different cities and regions using IP ser-vices, and the whole world is my oyster, like never before. I now speak my grandkids’ lingo: “Gran, hand me that flash drive, will you?” “Which one, how many gigabytes?” I can chat with people and visit any web-site – even the site of the Russian president or our governor Aman Tuleyev – if I have a complaint or a question.”

“My life goes on, in the here and now. My success story goes on, too, and I believe it will have no end.”
