Samara State Humanitarian University
| | Dreams Come True with Digital Literacy |
According to the team of the Digital Literacy Center at the Russian State University for the Humanities in Samara, their trainee Galina Arkhipova is quite a unique figure. Despite her age, she is full of energy, enthusiasm and determination. An alumna of Your Course: Digital Literacy, Galina is full of thanks for the many opportunities that have now opened up for her. She has become an active member of several Internet forums and communities, regularly shops online and is getting ready to become a volunteer at the Digital Literacy Center.
Thanks to Galina Arkhipova, her whole family has now taken Digital Literacy training: her husband, her daughter and her granddaughters. She herself mastered the Curriculum very quickly, especially enjoying the module on the Internet and the World Wide Web. According to her, the Internet has helped her realize a long-cherished dream. Galina is an avid gardener, and for a long time she has wanted to adorn her garden with a misting fountain. Misting fountains are not easy to find in Samara stores, so, once Galina learned to navigate the virtual space, she got registered in an online shop, found the misting fountain she wanted and had it shipped from Moscow.
“I’ve never imagined that online shopping could be so easy,” says Galina Arkhipova. “To be sure, our pensions are on the small side, but even with limited finances you can always find what you need on the Internet. The added bonus is that I no longer need to ask my granddaughters to drive me from store to store, because I can do it all on my own. Also it makes giving gifts much easier. Over the last several years I have had to ask my family members to take me shopping for their gifts – and where’s the fun in giving surprise gifts if they can see what I am getting them?”
Now Galina Arkhipova is an active member of online gardening forums and communities where she has made many new friends. When she completed Your Course: Digital Literacy training, her granddaughter gave her her old netbook and a modem. “Next year my entire garden will be transformed, you’ll see!” says the alumna excitedly. “Now I know how to create beautiful landscape designs – and on a budget, too!”
Galina is also planning to volunteer with the Digital Literacy Center as a trainer. “As soon as the gardening season is over, I am going to invite all of my girlfriends to take the computer training. It’s much better than simply vegging on the couch in front of a TV! Besides, most of them have home PCs but are too afraid to even turn them on. I think it’s time for us, senior citizens, to become part of modern life and show everyone that the Internet is not only for young people.”
