| Children Online: Internet Safety and Parental Control | Even before joining the YCDL Project, the Educational e-Center in Tambov constantly held community- oriented events providing protection and support to children and youth (including seminars in preventing domestic violence and sexual abuse, organizing and delivering support for children’s homes etc). On June 4, 2010, the YCDL Center held a seminar in online safety and security for children in honor of the International Children’s Day, traditionally celebrated on June 1. The seminar was attended by the Center’s trainees and alumni, members of local libraries, NGO activists and other Tambov residents, some of them bringing their children and grandchildren.
The seminar participants looked at a number of potential Internet risks for children such as malicious software, access to unauthorized content, contacts with strangers through e-mail and chat rooms, uncontrolled online shopping, etc. They received detailed technical and psychological recommendations on ensuring online security for children of various ages – for instance, developing a Family Internet Use Agreement, or detecting first signs of Internet addiction and addressing the problem early on. In conclusion the seminar participants were introduced to parental control features of Windows 7, Windows Vista and Kaspersky Internet Security, as well as such products as Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials. They also talked about safety-related aspects of working with the firewall and usefulness of automated operating system updating and visited several websites featuring information on Internet security for the entire family.
All the seminar participants received booklets on Windows 7 parental control features and a digest of the seminar materials including a list of links to security-related websites and a link to Microsoft’s Computer Security and Privacy course.
