Internet Safety Training for Children in Nizhny Tagil
On 3 June 2010, the YCDL Center in the Nizhny Tagil State Academy for Social Work and Education held a seminar in Internet safety for children in honor of the International Children’s Day, widely celebrated on June 1. The seminar was attended by future computer science teachers who showed great interest in learning about Internet risks and dangers and their potential consequences as well as safety measures and ways to protect one’s personal workplace and ensure Internet safety for family members. A special emphasis was laid on legal issues pertaining to information security and ways of training children and teenagers in appropriate netiquette skills.

The seminar’s keynote speaker was Dr. Sergei Potoskuyev, who spoke of technologies that help ensure online safety including optimal protection and security settings of firewalls, e-mail servers, Internet browsers, antivirus and antispyware security software, etc. All this triggered much animated interest, and students asked many pertinent questions, showing their awareness of how important it is to understand and minimize potential risks for underage users as they chat online, register on various websites, download unchecked content, etc. It was stated that children should not only be taught standard netiquette rules but also shown what NOT to do online, with a stress on negative results of such unhealthy behaviors.

Upon the whole, future teachers – who are also future parents! – gained much helpful insight on how to facilitate training in Internet safety for their young students. In the meantime, the YCDL Center team decided to hold a similar seminar in Internet safety for local secondary school teachers and concerned parents.
