Gold Pelican Charity Movement Award for St. Petersburg Vocational Rehabilitation Center

On 2 March 2011, Svyatodukhovsky Russian Orthodox Cultural and Educational Center of Alexander Nevsky Lavra held a ceremony for winners of the Mercy and Generosity of Heart Award, established by the Gold Pelican Charity Movement. St. Petersburg Vocational Rehabilitation Center was awarded in the Social Worker category for its efforts in providing digital literacy training for senior citizens as part of the Tvoy Kurs Project.

The annual award ceremony has been held since 1995 to honor projects and initiatives in areas of charity, patronage and social work in ten categories including Social Worker, Physician, Educator, Performance Artist, Journalist, Reviving the Tradition of Patronage, Reviving Religious Heritage, For Standing Firm, For Active Partnership with Gold Pelican, and Public Activist.

Early each year, once expert committees for these nominations are formed, the executive award committee announces the contest and then processes submissions and forms a list of candidates. The final choice lies with the Gold Pelican Charity Movement. Winners are awarded with a statue of a pelican feeding its young – an ancient symbol of good works, – and a certificate with the inscription: “Seeking others’ happiness we find our own.”

Microsoft’s social and educational initiatives, implemented by St. Petersburg Vocational Rehabilitation Center, have brought tremendous benefits to the city’s social scene and, especially, to local retirees, as free digital literacy training continues to draw large numbers of senior citizens to the Tvoy Kurs Center.

We are very happy for our colleagues in St. Petersburg and join them in celebrating this wonderful acknowledgement of their work on such a distinguished level.
