| Two YCDL Groups Launched in Volgograd |
On 24 – 25 August 2010 the Digital Literacy Center of M. Gorky regional academic library in Volgograd simultaneously launched two courses in Computer Basics for socially underserved residents of the city.
During the first session Ludmila Ulyeva, the coordinator of the Digital Literacy Center in Volgograd, introduced the website of Your Course: Digital Literacy Program and talked about the advantages and opportunities offered by the Project including free Internet access and free IT training. She also named some of the Digital Literacy seminars scheduled for the fall of 2010 such as Résumé Building, Job Search Online, The Art of Presentation or How to Present Your Project, and Searching for Socially Relevant Information Online and in Reference and Legal Databases.
The opening part was followed by an introduction to computer hardware and software including peripheral equipment and various data storage devices. Then the trainees looked at the structure of the Computer Basics module and divided into two groups according to their initial level of computer proficiency. Beginners started with learning to use the computer mouse while more “advanced” users moved straight onto some of the theoretical aspects of the course under the guidance of trainer Natalia Lazareva.
The two training groups include senior citizens, job seekers, people with disabilities and low-income people. Seeing the importance of digital technologies in the modern world, they all want to keep up with the times and hope that acquiring computer skills will help them change their lives for the better.
