| Heat Wave or Not, Learning Comes First! | Typically summer is a fairly intense affair in Russia, and the Mariy El Republic is no exception. This time because of the record heat wave and thick smoke from forest fires, many people chose to leave cities and stay in their country houses. However the Digital Literacy Center of Mariy El State University continued its work and on 16 August 2010, awarded Digital Literacy Certificate to yet another group of Computer Basics alumni.
Not even an unexpected and prolonged heat wave could curb the trainees’ desire to learn. Most of them were job seekers referred to the Digital Literacy Center by the local Employment Center. “One of the training’s main advantages is that it’s free,” say the alumni. “Most of the time employment agencies only pay for specialized retraining opportunities, not basic computer training, while commercial IT schools are way out of our reach financially. It is wonderful that our city finally has a digital literacy center!”
The trainees’ high motivation for learning pleasantly surprised the Digital Literacy Center team. “We have never yet had a summer group so keen on learning and mastering the skills,” said one of the trainers. “Often people display a somewhat passive approach to training, merely waiting to be taught and not taking much initiative. This time it was different!”
