Seminars for Potential YCDL Trainees in Samara
Summer is a time of vacations, especially for colleges and universities, so in July and August 2010 trainee numbers were down at the Digital Literacy Center of Russian State University for Trade and Commerce in Samara. In view of the situation the YCDL Center team decided to organize and hold a series of seminars for potential students and their parents, introducing them to the Digital Literacy Curriculum, forms and methods of training and self-study as well as testing and certification.

The seminars were organized in the following manner: several times during a regular working day in the Admissions Department small groups of three to five people (applicants and their parents) were invited to the Computer Hall where the YCDL Center team would hold a seminar for them. This experience showed that not only potential students but also their parents became very interested and enthusiastic about ICT training once they were clearly shown what to do and understood that basic computer skills would enable them to take the Digital Literacy Curriculum independently, from home, and completely free of charge. Young people were very willing to assist their parents and grandparents in acquiring basic computer proficiency. As one potential student who came to the Admissions Department with his mother and grandmother said, “Before school starts, I’ll be happy to show my parents and grandparents how to use the computer. Maybe then they too will become interested and stop telling me to get off the Internet!”
