| A New Target Audience: Home Makers and Their Children | In July 2010, eleven stay-at-home moms took a course in Computer Basics organized by the Digital Literacy Center in Samara. Most of the women were hard up financially and looking for work; they were also aware of how important ICT skills are for re-entering the workforce and did not want to be left behind. The trainees were especially interested in learning to use the MS Office productivity programs and the Internet.
The group was recruited through untiring efforts of trainer Natalia Yegorova and volunteer/future trainer Svetlana Nikitina. During the training, all the women said that as they were doing the course assignments on their home computers, their children (8-12 years old) became intensely interested in the process and even began assisting their moms. Svetlana Nikitina’s daughter, ten-year-old Tatiana, took the Digital Literacy Certificate Test along with her mother; she didn’t pass, but was awarded as “The Youngest YCDL Project Participant” for her enthusiasm and effort. It’s not the first time that young kids take Digital Literacy training along with their parents, so the administration of Samara’s branch of Russian State University for the Humanities where the Digital Literacy Center is located has decided to award the young trainees with special Youngest YCDL Project Participant certificates and award them with regular Digital Literacy Certificates if they score at least 90% on the Digital Literacy Certificate Test.
