A 102°F Heat Wave: Not a Problem!
On 29 July 2010, the digital literacy center of M. Gorky regional academic library in Volgograd launched its seventeenth training course in Computer Basics.

Despite the prolonged heat wave which is extreme even for sun-loving Volgograd residents, twelve new trainees from underserved population groups faithfully showed up for their first session in Computer Basics. Most of them are senior citizens, low-income people and job seekers, who appreciate the importance of ICTs in the modern society and hope to make their lives better through acquiring the skills necessary to keep up with the times.

During the first session, facilitated by YCDL coordinator Ludmila Ulyeva, the trainees stepped into the inner world of computers, looking inside an old desktop computer and trying to understand how its different parts fit and work together. They also learned about peripheral devices and various data carriers and asked many questions: “What is better, a laptop computer or a netbook?”, “Which printer ensures better quality?”, “Can one erase information from a USB flash drive?” and many others. They also talked about various computing solutions including, for instance, using a TV set as a computer monitor, etc. This was followed by a practical session on using a computer mouse and an introduction to general computer navigation and the Digital Literacy Computer Basics course, all facilitated by trainer Yulia Shcherbakova.

The staff workers of the Volgograd digital literacy center hope that scorching heat will not prevent the new training group from attending and successfully completing the course, and all the trainees will acquire basic computer skills and use them for their personal growth and professional advancement.
