Get Online Week at the Orphanage

Over the years of partnering with a local orphanage, Vologda central research library has held many recreational and educational events for the children and their caregivers, and often invited them to participate in its campaigns and initiatives. In November and December 2012 and January 2013, most workers of the orphanage successfully completed the Tvoy Kurs digital literacy training, receiving Your Course Digital Literacy Certificates.
The first training session the Tvoy Kurs coordinator ever had with the children was in the two large classrooms of their home – the warm and welcoming place where they all live, study, work and rest together. She came to the orphanage during Get Online Week 2013, to talk to the kids about online safety. Initially the event was designed for teenagers, but their younger “brothers and sisters” also wanted to participate, so the seminar, with a few breaks for the smaller children, lasted four hours. Even those teens who had said they weren’t coming to “some stupid talk about computers and the Internet” finally drifted in. The children were interested in absolutely everything! They wondered how their caregivers used to live without computers, asked about the best models of cell phones, and tried to understand what would be the best thing to have: a smart phone, an iPad or an Ultrabook, – so it was especially important to emphasize the need to be responsible about expensive purchases, without giving in to the itch to always have the latest gadget. The Tvoy Kurs coordinator also specially focused on safety in social networks which the children use on their mobile phones.
The children decided to try and take the Digital Literacy test and asked to watch the video about online safety. They spent almost four hours taking various tests on the Digital Literacy website. The first thing they got excited about was Skillage: as a result, almost half of the children and all the staff of the children’s home (even the maintenance manager and the driver) took the online Skillage test. Amazingly, the highest score belonged to ten-year-old Julia Solovyova, who received a small gift as a token of her participation in GOW13.
