| Your Course: Digital Literacy Comes to Novokuznetsk | On 8 July 2010, N. V. Gogol central municipal library in Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo region, launched a digital literacy center as part of Microsoft’s Your Course: Digital Literacy Program.
The task of training Russian citizens in modern ICT skills is becoming a more and more urgent in view of the developing e-government services. The challenge is especially relevant in smaller towns and rural areas where the general level of ICT access and digital competence is lower than in major cities.
The launch of the new digital literacy center was attended by Dmitry Islamov, vice governor of Kemerovo region for economics and regional development; Sergei Agapov, assistant director of the administration of Novokuznetsk’s Central municipal district; Mikhail Maslov, the head of the Culture Department in Novokuznetsk city administration; Aleksandr Chernyshev, Microsoft’s representative for working with administrative and self-government bodies in the Siberian Federal District; and representatives of other companies and organizations.
According to Dmitry Islamov, vice governor of Kemerovo region for economics and regional development, “the new digital literacy center has opened new prospects for Novokuznetsk residents, directly engaging them in the development of the modern information society in Russia.” Free computer literacy courses will enable socially underserved populations (including job seekers, senior citizens and other groups) to acquire basic digital competencies, gain competitive advantage on the labor market and retain a constructive and proactive attitude to life.
“It’s wonderful to see the local government bodies lend support to our initiative,” said Aleksandr Chernyshev, Microsoft’s representative for working with administrative and self-government bodies in the Siberian Federal District. “As a leading IT-company, Microsoft appreciates the increasing importance of modern ICTs in daily life. Information technologies help people realize their potential and fulfill their most daring dreams.”
